Through its long history, Lego has benefitted from a range of production features. These features have allowed Lego to develop some of the most loved toys in the world. This includes the development of a unique interlocking system and the use of plastic in place of other materials. These unique features have enabled the company to become the leading toy maker in the world.

In the 1960s, the business continued to grow quickly. Dagny, Godtfred Kirk Christiansens cousin, joined the company in the year 1960 as a model maker. Dagny was a pro at creating large-scale models and globes, which were displayed in the showroom. This was an excellent way to showcase the possibilities of LEGO bricks and also to create interest among children.

In 1971, the LEGO system began to expand with the addition of furniture pieces and dollhouses. In 1972, the program was further expanded by the additions of boat and ships sets that had floating hull pieces. The 1960s also saw the company begin its international expansion with sales in North America through a licensing agreement with Samsonite.

In the 1980s and 1990s the company continued to grow diversify, modernize, and diversify. The company also incorporated an engineering and research department, which worked to keep the LEGO System at the forefront of technological advancement. The introduction of themed sets allowed people to create specific models without having to build it on their own. This was the first step towards more complicated building and also allowed children to gain an even more hands-on experience using Legos.
